Many elephants are slaughtered to get their tusks. Because of the high demand of ivory, large numbers of mother elephants are killed leaving their orphaned babies alone in the vast jungle. Baby elephants can’t survive more than 2 days without their mother’s milk. That’s when Dr. Dame Daphne Sheldrick comes in.
Dr. Sheldrick is the founder of Daphane Sheldrick Orphanage for elephants in Kenya. She has dedicated her entire life to raise and successfully rehabilitate elephants and other animals through this organization. The orphanage rescues the orphaned elephants from the jungle and raises them till they reach the age of surviving on their own. When they are old enough, they’re transferred to protected areas and integrated with other orphan groups.
This video is a part of a show named 60 minutes which was recorded and broadcasted in 2009. It features the interview with Dr. Sheldrick about the orphanage and its work.
