This incident took place in the year 2006 in Netherlands. A group of about 100 horses were stuck on a small piece of land when water rose unexpectedly after a fierce storm in a small village called Marrum. The storm was said to have pushed seawater into the wilderness area outside the dikes of the village. 100 horses were stuck on a lowland knoll for three long days, and sadly, 19 of them lost their loves. Firemen and animal welfare officers transported food and water for the horses to keep up their strength while rescue attempts were carried out. None of them were successful.
However on the third day, an amazing rescue was made. Another storm was said to be quickly approaching. Someone posted a request on a horse forum seeking experienced riders without fear of water. Some female riders responded to the request. Norma Miedema started a group called the Netherlands Horse Rescue. The following day, this group of seven female riders endangered their lives to save that of the horses. These extraordinary women were later honored for their courage and bravery.
